When temperatures soar, the question I’m asked often is “Is it ok to wear shorts at work?”
Unsurprisingly, this is a hot (sorry) topic given the recent heatwave in London and the UK and with temperatures rising around the world.
A recent survey reported in The Sunday Times found that 60% of people believe it’s acceptable to wear shorts to work during hot weather.
As with most aspects of professional style, it’s less about the item itself and more about what and how you wear them.
A well-cut, tailored pair of shorts creates a very different impression from a baggy, casual chino style. One looks intentional and polished. The other belongs at the beach.
When I’m advising executive clients in London’s financial and professional services sectors, these are my three guiding principles:
1. Choose the Right Length
A tailored Bermuda style that finishes just below the knee creates a balanced silhouette and looks smart enough for many office environments. Avoid hems that finish mid-calf, as they can visually widen the leg. In more traditional corporate workplaces, keeping the knee covered generally creates a more professional appearance.
2. Invest in Quality Fabrics
Choose breathable natural fibres such as linen, cotton or a linen blend, with a structured waistband which is tailored similar to suit trousers. Avoid jersey fabrics, drawstring waists and synthetic materials like polyester. The former look too casual and the latter will make you sweat in warm weather.
3. Finish the Outfit with the Right Shoes
Low-heeled pumps, slingbacks, peep-toes and open weave leather styles all create a polished finish while keeping you cool. Flip-flops and overly casual sandals can undermine an otherwise smart outfit. The right shoe will always depend on your proportions and personal style, so always try on the shorts with shoes in a full length mirror.
